Always a subject which causes confusion, we try and explain the ‘rules’…..
If you already have a No Claims Discount on
- the vehicle you want to insure and have insured for courier use previously
- a replacement vehicle where the previous vehicle was insured for courier use
If you already have a No Claims Discount on
- another commercial vehicle which you are keeping
- a private car you are keeping
If you don’t have any No Claims Discount at all but you have been an employed courier now moving to self-employed then, provided you can produce a letter from your Depot Manager confirming claims free driving, some Insurers will provide you with an ‘introductory’ discount equivalent to the same number of years.
It is important to remember that, regardless of the amount of ‘introductory’ or ‘mirrored’ discount, your first renewal will show 1 year entitlement to No Claims Discount and so on.
Whilst the amount of percentage discount allowed for the number of years can vary between Insurers, as a general rule the following scale can be regarded as typical.
| No Of Years | Discount |
| 1 | 20% |
| 2 | 30% |
| 3 | 40% |
| 4+ | 50% |
If you suffer a claim where your No Claims Discount is forfeit, you will usually only ‘step back’ by the equivalent of 2 years.
