The following is a general description of the features and benefits typically available to policyholders. It is not intended to be a complete summary of the policy cover available as such cover will vary between Insurers.
With each quotation provided by Aldium a Key Facts Summary of Cover will be supplied for the particular Insurer recommended.
LOSS OF OR DAMAGE TO THE VEHICLE etc
Vehicle
The cover available to you can be described as follows: Accidental Damage, Malicious Damage, Fire, Lightning, Explosion, Theft and Attempted Theft. Damage arising from your vehicle being taken without your permission may also be included by some Insurers. A policy excess is usually applied.
Glass
Damage to windscreens, windows and consequent scratching of bodywork is usually covered but may be optional cover rather than an automatic inclusion within the policy wording. Sunroofs may be included but are not always specifically mentioned. A policy excess is invariably applied.
Audio and other equipment
Most but not all Insurers include cover for permanently fitted audio equipment. A limit and a policy excess will normally be applied. Only some Insurers make specific reference to navigational equipment and some specifically exclude non-manufacturer fitted equipment.
Accessories
Insurers generally provide cover for accessories and spare parts kept in or on the vehicle for use in connection with the vehicle.
Personal Belongings
Most Insurers do not provide cover and, if it is available, it is for a low limit and excludes money, mobile phones, jewellery, goods and samples.
Replacement Vehicle
A new for old replacement for a vehicle less than 12 months old is only likely to apply if the vehicle is a car.
Trailers
The cover which applies to the vehicle is the same for a trailer if it is attached or has been specified in the policy. Detached or unspecified trailers can also be covered but such cover may be limited.
Replacement locks
Cover is usually provided for the cost of replacing locks if keys are stolen and it is believed that the relevant vehicle would be known to any person who came into possession of such keys. A limit will often apply.
Recovery and Delivery
The reasonable costs of protection and removal to a repairers if an insured loss has occurred. Also the reasonable costs of returning the vehicle.
What is not covered
- Loss or damage up to the amount of any relevant policy excess which will be increased in the case of young/inexperienced drivers.
- Wear and tear, mechanical and electrical derangement, electronic and computer failure, breakdown or breakage.
- Loss arising from delay.
- Any indirect loss.
- Failure to take reasonable care or failure to adequately maintain the vehicle.
- Deliberate loss or damage by the policyholder.
- Additional damage resulting from the vehicle being moved by the policyholder after an insured incident.
- Storage costs caused by the unavailability of a spare part/accessory nor the cost of importing any spare part or accessory into the UK.
- Theft or attempted theft because of:
- key left in
- doors or windows not secured
- reasonable precautions not taken
- required security device not activated
- audio equipment not removed/concealed where possible
- Loss or damage arising from the vehicle being confiscated, disposed of or destroyed by government, public or local authority order.
- Damage to tyres by wear and tear, braking, punctures, cuts or bursts.
- Damage by freezing of a liquid.
- Loss of value following repairs or theft.
- Loss of fuel.
- The cost of draining, cleaning and repairing as a result of incorrect fuelling
- Any loss suffered through the obtaining of property by deception.
- Loss or damage to any property on a trailer.
- Loss resulting from repossession or restitution of your vehicle to its rightful owner.
The above is not a complete list of all policy exclusions and neither do all Insurers impose all of the above. It is intended to be representative of the most significant exclusions which usually appear.

LIABILITY TO OTHERS
Cover for you
- Liability for causing injuries to other persons when driving, loading or unloading.
- Liability for causing damage to other persons property, usually limited to £5,000,000 (a limit of £20,000,000 applies for cars).
- Liability for third party claimants costs.
- The cost of legal services for defence against a charge related to an accident including representation at a Coroners Inquest or fatal accident enquiry.
- The cost of legal services for defending a charge of manslaughter, causing death by dangerous driving or causing death by careless driving when under the influence of drink or drugs.
- Liability arising whilst towing a trailer or broken down vehicle.
- Liability arising from the unauthorised movement by your permitted driver of any vehicle which is causing an obstruction to enable them to gain access to or leave premises.
- Liability arising from the unauthorised use of your vehicle by anybody in your employ.
- Liability arising from use, without your knowledge or consent, by your employee of a vehicle, other than your vehicle, for your business.
- Any emergency treatment fees required by the Road Traffic Acts.
Cover for other people
- Any person using or driving your vehicle with your permission as long as such person or use is included on your certificate of motor insurance.
- At your request, the owner of the vehicle if this is someone other than you.
- Any passenger travelling in or getting out of your vehicle.
- Any hirer of your vehicle provided such use is not excluded by the certificate of motor insurance.
- Any legal representative of any person insured in the event of their death.
What is not covered
- Any person claiming but not driving if, to the knowledge of that person, the driver does not hold a licence to drive your vehicle, unless the driver has held and is not disqualified from holding or obtaining such a licence.
- Liability incurred by anyone who is insured against the same liability under any other insurance.
- Loss of or damage to your vehicle or property belonging to or held in trust by or in the custody or control of you.
- Damage to premises not in your ownership but which are occupied by you under a legal agreement.
- Death of or injury to an employee in the course of their employment.
- Death of or bodily injury that happens away from the carriageway and involves anyone other than the driver or attendant of the vehicle bringing a load to or from the vehicle for loading or unloading.
- Liability arising out of any airside use at an airport, airfield or military base.
- Loss of use of your vehicle.
- Exemplary, aggravated or punitive damages.
- Death or bodily injury to any person or damage to property directly or indirectly caused by delivery of a load where such delivery was not authorised, not ordered or unlawful.
- Any result of terrorism other than to meet the requirements of the Road Traffic Acts or any other legislation applicable to motor insurance
- Liability when towing a trailer or disabled vehicle for profit.
- Liability when towing a trailer or disabled vehicle unlawfully.

Medical Expenses
Cover for any medical expenses incurred if the driver or any passengers are injured in an accident involving the insured vehicle. This is usually limited to an amount of between £150 to £500 per person.
Foreign Use
Cover is usually restricted to the United Kingdom or, alternatively, Great Britain, Northern Ireland, the Isle of Man or the Channel Islands. Policies also usually provide the minimum cover required for use in any country of the European Union or any country which has agreed to follow European Union Directives. Subject to an additional premium and prior advices to the Insurer, wider cover can be obtained.General Exclusions
Accident, injury, loss, damage or liability from the following are generally excluded from insurance policies:
- War, invasion, revolution or similar event
- Earthquake.
- Ionising radiations or radioactive contamination.
- Pollution or contamination.
- Terrorism.
- Pressure waves from aircraft or other aerial devices travelling at sonic or supersonic speeds.
